How to pray

Prayer is something that all Christians do because prayer is simply talking to God. And yet, prayer can often feel overwhelming for many of us,

especially if we don’t know how to pray or don’t have a lot of experience praying. So, whether you’re looking to understand prayer yourself,

or teach your kids how to pray, this resource is intended to help you do just that.

What Is Prayer?

Read the following Scriptures to see what the Bible says about prayer:

  • Psalm 18:6
  • Matthew 6:9-13
  • Ephesians 6:17-18
  • Philippians 4:6-7
  • 1 Timothy 2:1
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
  • Hebrews 4:16
  • James 5:16
  • 1 John 1:9
  • 1 John 5:14-15

At the most basic level, prayer is just talking to God. The Bible talks about the importance of prayer for God’s people, and it also tells us what prayer looks like. We learn that God hears us when we pray. We learn what kinds of things to pray for. We learn when to pray and how to pray.

Praying with My Kids

When it comes to helping your kids pray, our encouragement is to start simple. If your kids are young, keep your prayer time together short. Make sure to keep thanksgiving at the center of your prayers. It's easy to ask God for things, and that’s a part of prayer too, but we want to make sure that we’re coming to Jesus with a heart of thanksgiving and teaching our kids to do the same; thanking Him for who He is and what He’s done. As your kids get older, encourage them to pray when praying together as a family. Also, as they get older you can begin to pray longer prayers and pray about things that are more serious.

As with everything in life, lead by example. If your kids see you praying, and you pray with your kids on a regular basis, they will be more likely to make prayer a priority in their own lives.
